A Day in the Life with Horizon House Residents Bill & John

Bill and John moved into independent living apartment homes at Horizon House at different times. They soon discovered they have many things in common. A friendship ensued.

Both men are interested in social and intellectual engagement. John chose Horizon House because of the diversity and openness of thought. Bill knows social connection is beneficial for mind and body.

Bill is active on the Diversity Awareness Committee and volunteers for the Horizon House Monday Market. John a member of the Horizon House board of trustees Community Relations and Diversity Committee. He also co-chairs the LBGTQ+ committee.

Inclusive Friendships & Diverse Ideas

Meeting for coffee on one of the may Horizon House terraces inspires conversation.

“Residents gather together in a casual and friendly way over coffee, and the energy grows” says Bill. “Any time of day, you can find people to connect with and have great conversations. It’s quite pleasant and I always learning something new.”

An Accepting Community of Friends & Neighbors

Bill and John appreciate the spirit of inclusivity and the deep sense of community at Horizon House. Even the art displayed throughout the campus is an avenue for learning about various cultures and ideas.

“We have an aim at Horizon House to increase resident diversity,” says John. “We welcome diverse residents and are very supportive of LBGTQ+ activities. There is also active interest in understanding Seattle’s racially divided history and working to heal the wounds created by past wrongs.”

Close to Everything: Walkable Neighborhood in Seattle

Horizon House residents enjoy exploring the neighborhood. Bill and John stroll to nearby shopping by taking a shortcut from First Hill through the Convention Center and its elevators, to the center of downtown. It makes for great people watching, views of new art installations, and it’s easy on the joints!

Bill splits his time evenly between his apartment home and being out and about inside Horizon House and its surrounding neighborhood. John craves more quiet time and enjoys reading over a glass of wine at home.

Learning is a Lifestyle

Bill and John like to learn about culture through art, conversations, and formal lifelong learning programs at Horizon House, online, and at nearby institutions. They get together to read about news and world events, scientific discoveries, and financial matters.

“Horizon House is full of fascinating people who lead intellectually rich lives, full of incredible experiences,” says Bill. “The other day I talked with a group of people, all of whom brought different insights about a shared topic of interest. It was wonderful."
