Day in the Life

Every Day Is Yours to Design

What does a typical day look like at Horizon House? There isn’t one. With dozens of resident-led committees and special interest groups, your days unfold according to your interests, your schedule, and your vision for this chapter of life. Whether you’re attending a lecture on global affairs, working in the woodshop, exploring a local museum, or simply enjoying coffee with neighbors, life here reflects the rich diversity of the people who call it home.

Meet a few residents who’ve created their own version of inspired living in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood.

With both mind and body in motion, Danielle and Jack live a vibrant life. Each day starts with physical exercise, followed by exploration, learning, and thriving, whether inside Horizon House or around the streets of Seattle.

  • Karen Stays Active

    Karen Stays Active

Since living at Horizon House, she’s found that her zest for life hasn’t diminished, but grown. From her participation in a variety of resident committees, fitness classes, and a line-dance group, Karen lives her life in motion. Her lively personality and wit make her a welcome presence in the community.

You volunteer at the Monday Market each week, helping neighbors pick out greeting cards and small household items. Between sales, you catch up with friends and hear about weekend plans. The Market isn’t only shopping—it’s where the community gathers. By 11 a.m., you’re on your way to the library to pick up the book your reading group will discuss next week.

You walk to the Seattle Art Museum most Tuesday afternoons. The 15-minute stroll into Downtown clears your mind. Your SAM membership makes it easy to drop in for an hour or stay the whole afternoon. Today you meet a friend for lunch at Pike Place Market first, then walk back together in time for the 4 p.m. Environment Committee meeting.

You start the day with coffee and the newspaper in the Fireside Lounge, where you’ve met the same group of friends each morning for three years. At 10 a.m., you’re in the woodshop finishing a bookshelf for your granddaughter. By afternoon, you’re reviewing notes for tomorrow’s Dining Services Committee meeting—because residents here take an active role in shaping community life.
