Lifelong Learning at Horizon House
Curiosity Never Retires
At our Seattle retirement community, active minds never stop coming up with opportunities to explore new ideas, engage in meaningful dialogue, and pursue knowledge alongside a community of fellow learners. Whether you’re drawn to academic lectures, spirited group discussions, or the chance to audit college courses nearby, this is a place where staying curious isn’t just encouraged; it’s part of daily life.
Learn from the People Who Shaped Their Fields
Our community hosts an impressive roster of guest speakers (many of whom are also residents!) who come to share their work, expertise, and experiences. These aren’t ordinary presentations; they’re priceless opportunities to engage directly with activists, adventurers, historians, humanitarians, and scientists who are shaping our world. And they know to be ready for provocative, insightful questions that come from residents with decades of their own expertise.
Weekly discussion and education groups offer residents a chance to dive deeper into topics that matter:
- Diversity Awareness – Exploring perspectives and promoting understanding
- Election Forums – Engaging with Seattle’s civic leaders and current issues
- History Lectures – Uncovering stories from the past
- Let’s Talk Science – Discussing discoveries and innovations
- Secular Humanists – Examining philosophy and ethics
- World Concerns – Analyzing global events and their impact
These gatherings are more than educational; they’re where connections form and ideas flourish.
Learning Beyond Our Walls
Horizon House’s First Hill location puts you within walking distance of Seattle University and Seattle Central College, where cultural events and public lectures are frequently open to the community.
For those interested in formal coursework, the University of Washington’s ACCESS program allows adults 60 and older to audit courses on dozens of subjects, from literature and history to science and the arts. It’s an exceptional resource that keeps minds sharp and perspectives fresh.
Between the energizing intellectual culture within Horizon House and the academic institutions just beyond it, pursuing knowledge is as accessible as it is rewarding.
Resident Perspective

Horizon House is a village—it’s a community. There’s just so much happening. We’re both very impressed with the variety of programs and issues that are discussed. It’s kind of like being on a university campus.
