A Day in the Life with Horizon House Resident Karen

Karen moved to Horizon House after a satisfying professional life that included teaching and advocating for students with special needs.

Since living at Horizon House, she's found that her zest for life hasn’t diminished, but grown. From her participation in a variety of resident committees, fitness classes, and a line-dance group, Karen lives her life in motion. Her lively personality and wit make her a welcome presence in the community.

Karen’s apartment reflects her interests and loves. Works of art, and shelves filled with books and photos of her family, adorn the walls. Photographs and objects from her many travels add a true sense of who she is as a person.

Horizon House BEAM Program: Exercise, Balance, and Mobility

Karen begins most days with a workout in the gym. Guided by Horizon House wellness staff, she especially enjoys the BEAM program that intetgrates personal fitness initiatives, special training equipment, and lifestyle considerations—all important to reduce the risk of falls. Karen says, "I love working on my balance and brain while having lots of fun!"

A Little Solo Time

Some days, Karen enjoys spending time in the Gift Wrap Room where she artfully chooses paper and ribbon that make presents for loved ones even more special. Wrapping is also a meditative endeavor for Karen, bringing some quiet downtime to her normally active schedule.

For Karen, Horizon House Equals Connection

Karen’s social nature prompted her to become a mentor to new residents, like Judy. She engages with others by asking thought-provoking questions and showing a great interest in a variety of perspectives. Our campus is a busy place, and Karen also assists Judy in navigating all that Horizon House has to offer.

Horizon House is a Place to let Creativity Flow

Horizon House is brimming with activity. Karen and Judy take in the annual Art Show, an exhibition of original works by residents and staff. Our campus abounds with opportunities to make art in our spacious studio, to attend lectures from visitng artists, and to enjoy the extensive professional and significant works that adorn walls throughout our public spaces.
