The Holidays are Bright at the Horizon House Retirement Community in Seattle

Senior living communities are always a beehive of activity, and holiday time is no exception. Being of service is an important mission to so many of the residents of Horizon House. And the holiday season brings out the good will toward fellow residents, staff and the greater Seattle community in many ways.

For a peek inside Horizon House over the holidays, read on!

Warmth From the Inside Out

Sewing and knitting groups in retirement communities may sound cliché, but at Horizon House these groups are working for a cause. Horizon House residents dedicate hours, days and weeks to create handsewn clothing and quilts to donate to worthy charities over the holiday season.

Those who live in Seattle know this as the land of fleece, and our residents know it too. Matching fleece hat, mitten and scarf sets are sewn in all different sizes and colorful patterns. And, let’s not forget the cozy kids’ PJs. These comfy wearables are perfect for Seattle’s damp winters and are a nice addition, along with the knitting group’s handcrafted items, to help fill Santa’s bag for families in need at organizations such as Mary’s Place, Plymouth Housing and Youth Care.

Santa's Package Elves

Sometimes it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference. That’s the case with the Horizon House “package elves” who make an appearance during the holiday season. Each year, it’s traditional for a dedicated group of resident “elves” to volunteer to deliver the many gifts and packages that arrive by mail during the holidays. This is no small undertaking, with up to 150 packages arriving each day for Horizon House residents! Holiday warmth is wrapped up in the beautiful intention of giving and being of service. It’s also a wonderful time to visit with other Horizon House residents.

The Amazing and Festive Holiday Party

In true Horizon House senior living fashion, our residents have their own special spin on the community’s annual holiday party. The Holiday Party is hosted by residents for the entire staff of Horizon House—and their families too! It’s a glorious and festive way to say THANK YOU to all Horizon House employees.

Nothing is left to chance. The party is carefully planned and catered by residents. They bake dozens of homemade cookies to make sure everyone has something to nibble on. There’s a special activity room just for the kids, not to mention getting their photos taken with Santa (a resident, of course!)

But the highlight of the party has to be the gift giving. Each Horizon House staff member is given a generous financial gift, funds for which are raised by residents through the Employee Gift Fund.It is a heartfelt way to show appreciation to the many staff and employees that make the Horizon House senior living community hum.
