Arts and Culture
Don’t Just Live Your Retirement.
Express It.
At Horizon House, art isn’t just something you observe, it’s something you live. Our First Hill location puts you steps from Seattle’s finest museums and galleries, while our 800+ piece art collection transforms daily life. What’s remarkable isn’t what’s on the walls—it’s what happens around them. Our residents curate exhibitions, perform in concerts, and shape the artistic life of this community. Your creative voice matters here, whether you’re a lifelong artist or simply appreciate beauty and curious minds.
The Art You Create (And Curate)
Your artistic interests will thrive here. Whether you’re drawn to visual arts, lifelong learning, or hands-on creation, you’ll discover both the space and the people to pursue your passions.
Our Art Committee, run entirely by residents, curates selections from our permanent collection and organizes outings to local galleries and studios. Each year, they coordinate a resident and staff art show that celebrates the talent within our walls. The Flower Committee and Holiday Decorations Committee ensure our shared spaces reflect the seasons and celebrate community milestones with beauty and intention.
Creative studios throughout the campus offer everything from a printing press to a woodshop. Our teaching spaces support resident-led classes and workshops, where neighbors share skills in everything from watercolor technique to art history.
The Sound of Music
With a robust mix of professional performances and resident-led programs that honor every genre and tradition, music is a big part of life at Horizon House.
Wednesday Night Live brings professional musicians to campus for performances ranging from jazz standards to contemporary chamber works. Sunday Musicale offers classical music in an intimate setting, perfect for those who appreciate the depth of tradition. For opera enthusiasts, resident-organized lectures prepare audiences for upcoming Seattle Opera performances, adding context and anticipation to each season.
Proximity to Seattle’s renowned music venues, including Benaroya Hall and the historic Paramount Theatre, means world-class performances are always within reach. Yet some of the most memorable music happens right here, created by residents who love to share their talents with neighbors.
Residents Perform. Residents Create.
Horizon House residents don’t wait for entertainment to arrive, they create it themselves.
The String Alongs ukulele band performs regularly, their cheerful repertoire brightening community gatherings and celebrations. The Horizon House Singers brings voices together for seasonal concerts and special performances. Informal jam sessions often spring up when staff and residents with musical backgrounds gather to play together, blurring the line between performer and audience.
This culture of participation extends beyond music. Film enthusiasts curate movie nights and resident-organized film festivals, complete with popcorn and thoughtful discussion. The talent here isn’t imported, it’s homegrown, nurtured by a community that values what each person brings to the table.
