The Residents’ Council
Self-governance in Action
At Horizon House, residents don’t just participate in community life—they shape it. The Residents’ Council is a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as the official voice of our residents, giving them true ownership of community life. Fifteen elected residents oversee all committees, fund programs through the Monday Market, and collaborate directly with leadership on decisions that affect daily life. It’s the organizational framework for a self-directed community where individuality thrives.
How Residents Shape Daily Life
Resident-led committees cover every aspect of community life. The Dining Committee refines menus. The Wellness Committee plans fitness programs. The Environment Committee explores carbon neutrality. Committee chairs collaborate with staff, review proposals, and make decisions that directly affect operations. It’s not a suggestion box—it’s genuine influence over the community you live in.
The Monday Market: Community in Action
Every Monday morning, residents gather at The Monday Market—part general store, part social hub, entirely resident-run. This volunteer-operated marketplace offers everything from greeting cards to household essentials, with proceeds supporting resident programs and charitable causes. Beyond shopping, it’s where neighbors catch up, newcomers find their footing, and the pulse of community life beats strongest. The Market shows true self-directed living in action: residents identifying a need, organizing to meet it, and creating something that enriches everyone.
Monday Market Commitment

The Monday Market raises funds for resident programs, but it also provides a social space for friends to meet and chat, not to mention being a valuable resource for those moving into Horizon House. New residents can purchase items or donate items no longer needed when they downsize.
